Jute Bags for Environmental Awareness Campaigns: Planning the Handout
Environment days, clean-up drives, plastic-free weeks and sustainability fairs often include a bag handout. It is a natural fit, since a reusable bag is a tangible way to support the message. It also carries a risk: a handout that is not used, or that contradicts the campaign, undermines the message it was meant to support. This guide helps corporate, education, NGO and municipal organisers plan a handout that holds up.
Start with the campaign’s purpose
Write down what the campaign asks people to do: carry their own bag, reduce single-use plastic at a site, join a clean-up, or learn about local waste systems. The bag should support that action. A bag handed out at a “bring your own bag” campaign should be sized and designed for everyday carrying. One given at a clean-up may carry gloves and leaflets you supply on the day.
Match the bag to what participants receive
List the materials you will hand out with the bag, such as leaflets, pledge cards, seed packets or a reusable bottle you have sourced, and size the bag to fit them and to stay useful afterwards. HANDCRAFT supplies the bags. Campaign materials, packing and distribution remain the organiser’s responsibility unless separately agreed.

Keep the handout consistent with the message
Participants and media notice contradictions. Check the whole bag:

- Is it laminated or does it have a plastic window? If so, avoid calling it plastic-free.
- Is the body natural colour (undyed)? That is an honest, simple description.
- Are inks azo-free? HANDCRAFT confirms azo-free printing inks.

Plan distribution so bags reach people who will use them
Unlimited free distribution can lead to people taking several bags they never use. Consider one bag per registered participant, a bag on completing an activity, or distribution through a partner site with a defined audience. Record how many were distributed. That record also helps you size the next campaign.
Design for reuse, not just the day
A campaign date and hashtag can date a bag quickly. Many organisers put the permanent message or logo on the bag and dated details on an insert or card. Keep artwork bold enough for jute’s weave. If the campaign has a pledge or slogan, keep it truthful and modest. Message wording is covered in Pledge and Campaign Messages on Branded Bags.

Timing for fixed campaign dates
Awareness days are fixed in the calendar, so plan backwards. Usual delivery guidance is 2–4 weeks, depending on quantity and printing. Allow for approvals and transit to the campaign site. Dyeing adds two weeks and extra charges, and natural colour avoids that step.

Messages on the bag
A short invitation such as “Carry me again” is usually more credible than an impact claim. Avoid figures for plastic saved unless your campaign measures them. See Pledge and Campaign Messages on Branded Bags. HANDCRAFT uses azo-free printing inks, with the printing method confirmed for each order.

Questions buyers ask
Can the bag carry a pledge line?
Yes, if the wording is truthful. See keeping pledge messages truthful.
Will HANDCRAFT distribute the bags?
No. HANDCRAFT supplies the bags; distribution stays with your team or partners.
